How to perform a CSS swim test

Record the total elapsed time for a maximal, evenly paced 400 m swim and a maximal, evenly paced 200 m swim. Use the same pool or course length, the same start convention, and comparable conditions for both. Allow adequate recovery so fatigue from one effort does not distort the other; the trials do not have to occur in a single session.

Try to distribute each effort evenly rather than sprinting the opening lengths. Pool setup, push versus dive starts, manual versus electronic timing, fatigue and pacing can all affect the result, so repeatable conditions matter when comparing tests.

How Critical Swim Speed is calculated

CSS per 100 m = (400 m time − 200 m time) ÷ 2. First convert both total times to seconds. The difference covers the extra 200 m between the trials, which is two 100 m units, so dividing by two gives seconds per 100 m.

The calculator retains the exact result for conversions. It rounds displayed paces to the nearest whole second, converts the metre pace to an equivalent 100-yard pace using 1 yd = 0.9144 m, and calculates speed as 100 divided by the raw CSS seconds.

CSS calculation example

A 400 m time of 6:40 and a 200 m time of 3:10 give a difference of 3:30. The calculation is (6:403:10) ÷ 2 = 1:45 per 100 m. That is equivalent to 1:36 per 100 yd and 0.95 m/s.

How to use CSS

CSS is a practical estimated training reference. Athletes and coaches may use it to describe or structure threshold-oriented swimming and to compare repeated tests performed under similar conditions. It is not a physiological diagnosis, a guaranteed race pace or a complete training prescription. Different coaching systems may interpret or apply threshold references differently.
